Three New Ways to Color the Beautiful Paint-A-Flower: Calla Lily Outline Stamp Set

Hi there, Altenew friends! Norine back with you today to show you 3 fresh ways to use the outline stamp set, the Paint-A-Flower: Calla Lily that was released last week!  (For a 4th, more “traditional” take on this stamp set you can see what I did with it for the release blog hop, here).

To break it down generally, after I stamped each card, I used a variety of mediums to color the images, stamping one on colored cardstock and adding shading with alcohol based Artist Marker, another I stamped and heat embossed then shaded with Waterbrush markers and the last, I stamped with the new Mixed Media inks and watercolor painted outside the lines.

Let me show you:

Card 1

For my first card, I stamped the image onto turquoise cardstock with embossing ink and then heat set with white embossing powder.  I stamped a sentiment from the Paint-A-Flower Calla Lily stamp set and heat set it to match.

I shaded the leaves and petals of the image with Artist Markers – Volcano Lake and Mountain Mist, taking care to keep the color away from the white embossed lines.

To finish the card, I added two narrow strips of cardstock, one patterned in matching colors and one white, then added a few white enamel dots.  This is a coloring technique I love because it is quick and easy and shows off the stamped image in a beautiful and simple way.

Card 2

The second card is similar to the first in it's monochromatic treatment.  This time though, I stamped with embossing ink onto smooth cardstock that allows water-based blending and heat set with Platinum embossing powder.

I used the Lava Rock color from the Tropical Fiesta Waterbrush marker set to add shading to the stamped image.  I love how subtly and perfectly it matches the Platinum colored embossing powder.  Once the coloring was dry, I splattered the card panel with more of the same ink color by smearing the color onto a palette and picking it up with a wet paint brush.

The sentiment is another from the PAF: Calla Lily stamp set and is stamped and heat embossed onto a strip of matching patterned paper from my stash.  Finally, I added a narrow strip of aqua colored cardstock for a little pop of color!

Card 3

For my third card, I stamped the image with the Forest Glades and Evergreen inks in the new Mixed Media inks Green Fields color family onto Altenew's cold press watercolor paper.  The properties of these new inks makes them suitable for adding water and having the color spread.

My intention was to paint with a wet brush from the stamped lines outward, reconstituting the ink so it could blend and spread. Because of the size of the image I wasn't able to get all the way around the stamped image with a wet brush before all the ink dried, so I simply made more paint by smearing and diluting the ink from the ink pads and blending it with the background color already in place.  Referring to the stamp set insert card, I could carefully paint in the background areas in the middle of the bouquet to allow the image to be the focus.

I stamped the Thank You sentiment from the Paint-A-Flower: Calla Lily Outline Stamp Set again, heat setting with Platinum Crisp Embossing Powder and added another of the patterned paper strips to ground the image and add some interest.
